Short Story for Kids written by: Ulica Tizaber.

Pooky was a boy from Alaska. He lived inside an igloo with his Eskimo family. They barely went out due to the weather conditions in his country, but they received many visits from foreign kids.

There was lot of tourism in Alaska and so there were many visitors. Pooky had to learn several languages.

The first language and dialect he spoke was Yupik, from northern Alaska. This is the language he used to speak in to his family at home, especially with his grandparents.

He also learned to speak Russian, English, French and Spanish. He was a real multilingual boy and was so proud of it.

The words Pooky used were very different. He was a language expert which is why, when he talked to other children in their own language, Pooky enjoyed stealing their words.

How did he steal them? Easy, he kept the words that meant the same in all languages, but used a different pronunciation so that he and the other kids had to continue talking without using these stolen words.

It was like this until the day arrived when nobody could understand what the others were saying. Only Pooky was able to understand all his foreigner friends. Because he had all the possible translations needed to speak each language clearly. He hadn´t thought that if there were no kids to talk to, he wouldn´t have anything to learn.

When he realized this, he began to feel very sad and he felt sorry for everything he had done. From that day, little by little, he began to share out the words he had stolen until all the kids had theirs back, and he felt better.

That is how the eskimo boy understood that to listen and share with others is what matters in life.

And that is the end of the story…

Short Stories for kids written by: Franca Gordillo.

This story begins in a little town in southern Italy, where the only way of life is to cultivate the small parcels of land that have been inherited from generation to generation.

This is the story of a peasant family, in which Anthony and Natalie, are the parents of Joan, Peter, Mary, Rose and Mimi.

It wasn´t easy to live there, because the Second World War had finished not long ago and so they all had to work hard, without exception, to cultivate land made up more of stones than productive soil, so they had to work even harder.

But they were united, and were able to turn their arid land into fertile land, and thanks to the harvest were also able to feed their family, live an honest life with dignity albeit without any luxuries.

One day, while they were doing their daily hard work, they got some suprising news, there was a new heir on the way.

The news created many expectations, but the biggest expectation was Peter´s because he was the only boy who wanted to have a “little brother”.

Time passed, and the expected baby was born, but it was not a boy but a girl.

Peter´s disappointment was so deep that hev could not hide it. But Natalie, using her mum´s wisdom, that you can’t get everything you may want from nothing, comforted him saying:

– “Son, you have to be happy with your new sister, and if you are, I will let you name her”.

Peter felt so proud and came to his senses. And so, in this way, Phoebe was born (also the name of Peter´s girlfriend).

Phoebe began her life surrounded by nature and her family. She went to the fields every day and working with the others she was happy, had no worries and being always attentive was able to take care of all of them.

But the little girl had had a special problem since she was very young, she didn´t like wearing the same clothes two days in a row and there was no way to comfort her. It was incredible to see how she saw everything around her as so small and how she cried when she did not like something.

So, Natalie intervened again, she didn´t talk too much but she acted with wisdom. Would you like to know what Natalie did?

…She took off Phoebe’s dress, and nervously turned away to hide what she was doing. Then she turned the dress inside-out, and looking back at the girl said:

– “Look! I’ve just got you a new dress!

And the 3 year old girl being so innocent, wore her new dress very happily.

THE END

Moral of the Short Story: There is no need to have many things. To value what you have is what matters. Besides, you don´t need many things to be happy if you have love.

Values of the Short Story: Love, understanding, Effort.

But the tourists didn’t know this and they used to run away when they saw him, and Kuba thought that was funny.

Kuba was a bit liar, and liked to make fun of people, Every time he saw tourists who were scared of him, Kuba used to roar making the visitors run away – “hahaha, I´m not going to hurt you, silly!”

aut one day a policeman saw him roaring at a tourist and, even though he knew he was harmless, he decided to arrest him for public disorder.

Kuba had learnt his lesson and never lied to another tourist again.

Every 31st of October, Kingtown celebrates Halloween, also known as the night of the witches.

Kingtown is a mountain village situated up in the hills and it is always covered with fog at sunset, which makes visibility more difficult for its inhabitants.

One year, at Halloween, everyone was walking to the main square where somebody was telling a scary story, and with the thickness of the fog, it was difficult to see people´s costumes.

Julie was dressed up as a witch, and as she was walked to the square, she felt a shiver down her spine. The nearer she came the more shivers she felt, but she couldn´t see anything because of the fog.

When she arrived at the square she noticed that something strange was going on. Everyone was wearing the same costume. “They are all zombies!” – thought Julie, – “walking to the cemetery”.

A zombi passed near Julie and touched her, she screamed when she realised that it was a real zombi. She went to see another zombie to check if it was real too or just a costume, but it was real.

Julie ran away from the square trembling with fear, but couldn´t hurry too fast because of her witch costume.

Suddenly someone caught her arm It was a zombie, Julie started to scream “help, help!”, but nobody could hear her. Suddenly, an alarm clock sounded.

It was only a nightmare because of a movie about zombies that Julie had seen the night before. She had learnt her lesson and never saw a horror movie before going to bed again.

THE END

Once upon a time, there was a wolf called Howler who lived in a valley where lots of fruit trees grew. Howler would often try to climb up the trees to eat the fruit they produced. But the most appetising fruit was on the very tall trees that Howler couldn’t reach.

In the valley, an elderly man named Martin also had a few fruit trees that he looked after very carefully. But as he was getting older, he began to notice that he lacked the strength to pick the fruit, for it was very tiring work.

Martin had some of the biggest and most delicious fruit trees in the valley, which was why Howler had his eye on them. So one day he decided to try and reach their fruit and started jumping up and down the trunk.

Martin, who was looking out of the window, realised that the wolf was trying to steal fruit from his beautiful trees, but however much Howler jumped and howled, he couldn’t reach even the lowest branches of such a big tree.

Seeing this, Martin had a great idea: he offered Howler a ladder to climb up, but in return the wolf would have to give him half of whatever he picked. Only then would Martin continue lending him the ladder.

Howler accepted the deal and set to work collecting the fruit, and for one whole morning he went up and down the ladder filling his basket with the fruit they would then share between them.

Howler soon realised that he could eat double the fruit if he didn’t have to give Martin his share, so he thought up a new, secret plan… Martin, on the other hand, trusted Howler and even began to think they would be friends for ever.

But the greedy wolf managed to rob the ladder from Martin and went off to other trees in the area for more fruit. Realising that it was missing, Martin went looking for it… found it… grabbed the ladder, and then gave Howler such a whack with it that all the fruit the wolf had eaten came flying out of his mouth.

Martin felt very disappointed at the trick and no longer trusted Howler. But he still forgave the greedy wolf and they later became friends again, though he never made any more deals with him.

But Howler learned that we shouldn’t trick people and that promises are made to be kept. He also learned that if he had been honest and not greedy, he would still have been able to enjoy some delicious fruit – even though it was only half of what he would have got alone.

THE END

Many years ago when I was a little girl, there were lots of shepherds with their flocks of sheep. It was very strange not to find one in each village, for being a shepherd was a very normal job in those times. These days, very few children have seen a flock of sheep, except in stories and photos.

The little sheep in my village lived in an enclosure where they had a basin of water on one side for when they were thirsty, and straw on the other side for when they were hungry. Inside the enclosure was a shed that the sheep used as a shelter on days when it was rainy and cold.

The shepherd looked after them very well. It was he who gave them the straw to eat and water to drink. He also milked them and went out into the fields with them all.

What I remember most about this time was the noise of the little sheep coming back from grazing in the fields, for Nino the shepherd would put a bell on them and you would hear a tinkling “ding ding ding” sound as they trotted by, and all the children would run behind them laughing and jumping around.

The flock of sheep always passed in front of my house, and I have to admit that I was a little scared when I saw the shepherd go with them, for Nino also had a couple of goats and they frightened me a great deal – for these goats had horns.

Despite the shepherd’s humbleness and his kindness to the villagers (for he would give them milk and cheese that he made himself), there were some people in the village who disliked him intensely.

Whenever he herded the flock down the main street towards the fields, the sheep and goats would leave a mess as they passed. Each villager was in charge of sweeping his own patch, and that was how they kept the village clean. But two of those neighbours, the ones I’ve mentioned, hated Nino and refused to do any sweeping for they believed that the shepherd should be responsible for whatever mess his flock made.

But when it came to sharing out the milk among his neighbours, Nino never excluded anyone, not even the villagers who spoke badly of him. And he did it because he knew that it was a bother to the neighbours to have dirty streets every day, and this was his way of thanking them.

THE END

My name is Laura, I’m 9 years old and I live in the city. In summer, when it’s school holidays, I go to my grandparents’ house in a little village.

One day, I walked through the orchard to visit Mr. Anselmo, one of my grandparents’ neighbours, so he could teach me how to grow tomatoes and carrots. I wanted to plant my own little vegetable garden at home. There were all sorts of vegetables and fruit in Mr. Anselmo’s garden, because he was the best gardener I had ever met.

“Hello Mr. Anselmo!! How are you?” I asked.

“Well good day to you, miss, ready to learn where most of my food comes from?” he replied.

“Yes! I’m impatient because I want to be a gardener,” I said.

Mr. Anselmo spent all morning teaching me how to look after tomatoes and carrots, how many times to water them, and, above all, how important it is to keep the ground free of weeds, because this could really affect the tomatoes.

From Mr. Anselmo’s lessons, I planted a vegetable patch of tomatoes and carrots. To protect the tomatoes (because carrots grow under the ground and don’t need to be protected), I put up a scarecrow – the birds had eaten the first tomatoes to come out, and I didn’t want them to take any more…

The scarecrow would be in charge of protecting my vegetable patch from the local birds. He had a straw hat and a blue monkey and I painted two eyes, a nose and a mouth on his face.

Ever since I made him, not a single bird has come near to nibble at my tomatoes. I wondered how he did it, so one day I hid a camera in a bush and set it to record.

The next day when I picked up the camera and watched the video, I got a real surprise! A bird was flying near the tomatoes but the scarecrow started spinning around like a windmill and scared him off.

Then I understood that a garden is a magical place, not just because of the rich food that comes from the earth, but because of all the things that make up a garden – the earth, the water, the scarecrow, the compost and lots of other things that work together to give we humans the very best food.

THE END

Short Story written by: Mila

There was once a little shepherd boy called Nino, who lived in a little village at the foot of a mountain, with green meadows and a plentiful river. But it wasn’t just the beautiful nature that made the village a charming place, it was also the kindness of its one hundred inhabitants.

The little shepherd boy was always with his flock of sheep, his dog and his little donkey. Every day before the sun came up, Nino the little shepherd boy was already ready to milk the sheep and goats in his flock and then go out onto the meadows with them.

Although he was a little older now, Nino the little shepherd boy still spent all day outside, returning just before it grew dark as tired as his flock. Being a shepherd was indeed a very selfless job, for you needed to be strong and fit to spend all day every day walking through the fields. And there was the milking to be done too, so that people could have milk and cheese.

Whenever there was too much milk from milking the sheep and goats, the little shepherd boy would usually share it out among the villagers. For him, this was a way of saying thank-you to his neighbours, for they had always treated him very well. Sometimes, when he arrived home at night, his neighbours Mario and Melisa would have prepared dinner for him, for they knew that he would be exhausted from being outside all day long. And in a similar way, each and every one of his neighbours made him feel happier.

Nino the little shepherd boy knew that the villagers loved him a great deal, and that was why he too loved them and wanted to make them happy with little gestures of kindness.

THE END

There was once a farm situated on the outskirts of a village, called Bimbo’s Farm.

There were lots of animals there – cows, sheep, chickens and a little piggy called Pinky, who had been the last to arrive as he was only two months’ old.

-

Watch this children’s story and connect English subtitles:

Pinky was a very playful little pig, who liked spending time with the sheep grazing out on the meadows. He would run behind them until Pluto the sheepdog told him off for not letting the sheep eat in peace. So he would stop bothering them – until Pluto’s attention was turned elsewhere…

For all his peskiness, Pinky was a very brave little pig, for one day when the sheep were out on the field he saw a wolf creep up in the bushes and pass unnoticed in front of the napping Pluto.

All at once, the wolf bounded out of the bushes and made straight for the sheep, but Pinky acted quickly and warned them to run as fast as they could back to Pluto. Hearing the sheep baa-ing madly, Pluto awoke with a start and raced to defend them by frightening off the wolf.

From then on Pinky became known as the brave little pig at Bimbo Farm, for it was thanks to him that the sheep were not injured by the wicked wolf. And so the sheep and the little pig Pinky became firm friends, and the sheep no longer minded the little pig playing with them.

THE END
