Short Story written by: Zoila Mariano Faillace

There were three friends who really liked spend time together, but one of them was black, and wanted to be white. One of his friends investigated how to turn his friend into a white kid, and found out that there was faraway town where the sea could change the skin color of those swimming in it.

He said to his friend:

“I know how to turn you white”

And the friend said:

“Really? how?”

“We have to travel to a place where the sea can change your color”

And the friend said: “So, let´s go!”

The three friends began their trip, first by train, had complicated moments, until finally reached the place they had talked about.

What a surprise when realized that the sea was a chocolate sea, were excited and got swept up in their wishes, and two of them ended up in the chocolate sea, eating that delicious chocolate.

“friends, go out, so I can go inside to change my color”

They said: “come in, we will swim together”

He went into the sea, later, when they all were satisfied, went out, and the white kids realized that they were the ones that had changed their color instead of the black kid, they began to cry and said:

“We are so sorry, we just wanted you to be like us, God, help us to solve this, we will respect people as they are, we did not realize that what is in the heart is what matters”.

Little by little, the chocolate on their bodies was melting. They looked to the sky and said thanks to God. The kids learnt the lesson.

THE END

Moral of the story: Skin color does not matter, what matters is how we are inside our hearts. Religion, skin color or habits do not matter.

Short Story written by: Viviana Martinez (Colombia)

Hi mum, I am going to tell you something that happened to me today at nursery school. Imagine for a minute that I was the new girl at school and everybody saw me differently but that I was in the middle of everything; Do you know what, mummy?, I met a skinny girl, with long, black hair like Rapunzel´s, but also curly. She has chocolate coloured skin and a heart full of love and happiness, and she hugged me with her soft arms.

Today, we played on the swings. I pushed her first and then she did the same for me. We ran around the fields and ate a huge raisin ice-cream, the one I really like. Then, we ate a soup like the soup you usually cook for me with delicious blackberry juice.

The teacher laid us on a feather mattress and we closed our eyes little by little, while nice music was playing and so we slept like angels for an hour.

Then we opened our eyes slowly, thanks to our teacher, who carefully whispered us: “It´s time to wake up, it´s time to wake up”.

We stretched out and went to have a snack. It was a glass with milk that had something at the bottom, which I later discovered were corn grains. I tasted it, but I didn’t like it. But, as you had told me this morning that I had to eat everything, I closed my eyes, opened my mouth and drank it.

We went back to the hall and our teacher combed our hair and organized the end of the school day. While she was making my braid, I asked her why Juliet’s skin was coloured like chocolate, and mine was white like snow and I wondered if I had to eat lots of sweets and chocolate biscuits to be like my little friend.

The teacher told me that there are lots of kids that are snow coloured and chocolate coloured in the world, but that we are very similar in our ideas and thoughts and that we have the same rights and obligations independent of our skin color.

We have to accept and love people like Juliet with her chocolate skin and me with my snow skin, and my pair of eyes, my glasses, my mummy, everything – hahaha.

That was today´s adventure and I can´t wait for tomorrow to see my friend. Now I am going to bed, mummy, because tomorrow I will play, sing and dance with my friends and my teacher at nursery school.

THE END

When their parents bought a nutcracker to eat nuts at night, the two boys wanted to use it. They fought so much over the nutcracker that one of them got his hands caught in it, and then it fell on his brother’s foot.

Both started crying and their parents said: “That has happened because of your selfishness. I hope you two have learnt your lesson” – and they had.

They had learnt to share their toys and things and to not argue over every single thing.

In a little town near a river lived a nice crocodile who everybody ignored. People were nice and happy except when with him.

An old woman always disturbed him and the rest of the animals used to blame him for everything, even if it wasn´t his fault.

One day, the poor crocodile was relaxing on the riverbank when a group of people started to make fun of him. When a little boy saw this, he approached him: “Don´t worry little crocodile, I will be your friend” – the crocodile was very happy: “Thank you so much, now I have a friend.”.

Weeks passed by and the crocodile and the child became very good friends. One morning something strange had happened, somebody had stolen all the food from all the houses.

The fuss captured the prince´s attention and he went to see what was going on: “Who has done this?” – he asked.

– “I saw a toad enter the houses last night.” – said the crocodile

– “Then go to his house and see what he is doing.” – said the prince

The crocodile went to the toad´s house. When he arrived he saw all the stolen food inside.

He recovered the food and took it back to the houses, and from that day on everybody in town has respected the crocodile and learnt to not judge anyone before getting to know them.

One year Melchior´s camel was very tired. He didn´t want to walk any more because the gold he was carrying was heavier than the incense and the myrrh.

Balthazar´s camel also complained. He said that the smell of the incense was very strong and didn’t make him feel at all well.

Then, Gaspar´s camel said: “Well, I don´t have any problem arrying the myrrh, so we should share the load out“.

That is how the camels reached an agreement and enjoyed their trip to Bethlehem with the Three Wise Kings

Hannah was a turtle who lived in “Imagination forest”. One day she had a dream that felt real, so she decided to make it real when she woke up.

When her day began, she dressed up as a stone and went to the road that goes to “Calmed lake” and stayed there waiting. Only three people passed by that morning: “Daydream” the squirrel, “Lively” the butterfly and “Explorer” the deer.

“Daydream” was lost in thought and didn’t even notice that Hannah was there. “Lively” jumped over the flowers and dodged Hannah, and “Explorer” just smelled her and then left.

Hannah realised that it was just like in her dream, everybody had ignored her. Suddenly, a little girl with a pony tail arrived singing happily. When she saw the stone she stopped, caressed it and said: “Oh, this stone is so soft and beautiful, maybe it fell from a car. I will put it away so nobody can step on it”.

Hannah felt satisfied for a moment, but then realised that the girl only cared about what happened to the stone and not about the rest. So Hannah took off her costume.

The girl was really surprised to see that the stone was actually a turtle. “My beauty as a stone cannot eclipse my feelings as a turtle,” she said, – Try to look after everybody”.

The girl understood what Hannah meant: “We are all important in Imagination forest and we have to reach Calmed Lake by helping each other and working together”.

THE END

It was a summer afternoon, and like most summer afternoons, a group of boys were playing together in a park. They knew each other well, as they had spent the last three years of school together and tomorrow was the start of a new term, about which they were very excited and nervous.

The first day of school came, and all the boys from the park the day before were put in the same class. They jumped for joy all morning long. After lunch, the teacher came into the classroom with a boy they had never seen before. He was from China, and none of them had ever met anyone from that country.

All the children were quiet, waiting for the teacher to speak. And this is what she said: “Hello everyone, this is our newest class member. His name is Meipei and he’s six years old, just like all of you. Meipei comes from China, but he knows some English so I hope you will help him settle in and make him feel at home.”

Then one of the children said to Meipei: “How come you speak differently?” so Meipei answered: “In my country, we all talk this way. But we’re just the same as you.”

The children in the class understood this, and that it also didn’t matter what he looked like, or what colour his skin was, or that he didn’t speak perfect English.

So the new addition to the class helped everyone learn how to respect new people. And the boys stayed in the same class for another two years, with Meipei as one of their best friends.

THE END

My name is George, and I’m going to tell you a story that happened last year just after my birthday. For a few months, I had noticed that mum and dad were acting differently towards me – they weren’t paying me so much attention.

My parents were very happy; they laughed a lot, and even my father, who is quite serious, wouldn’t stop cracking jokes to everyone. I just couldn’t understand why they were behaving so differently. Maybe it had to do with my mum’s growing tummy…

One day at breakfast, they said to me: “George, we’ve got some good news for you; you’re going to have a little sister!”

“A little sister? So… that’s what’s wrong with you!” I said.

“What do you mean?” Dad asked.

“Well, you’ve been ignoring me because you’re going to have another baby!” I said.

Then they put their arms around me and told me they loved me just as much as ever and that even though I would have a sister, that would never change. But they changed, lots…

When Clare was born, it was like I was invisible. Mum and dad only paid me attention to scold me for not having finished my homework before dinner, or for not eating my peas. Day after day, it was like my parents had forgotten about me completely and they only had time for Clare.

One day at school in language class, the teacher came to my desk to see how I was getting on with the exercise, and told me: “Everything all right, George? You look sad…” For the first time in months, someone was worried about me, so I confided in her: “Yes, Miss, ever since my sister was born, my parents have been ignoring me.” Then Miss said: “You don’t have to be sad about that, George. Remember that Clare is just a baby and she’ll need a lot of care until she’s a little older. Don’t worry, your parents love you just the same, or even more!”

The next day, Dad was waiting for me at the school gates, but he wasn’t alone – my teacher was talking to him. I don’t know what she said to him, but from that day on, my parents started behaving towards me the same as they always had.

So I hope my story helps parents to understand that the love and attention we children need is always the same, no matter what.

THE END

In a school many years ago there was a teacher called Maria, who was very strict but knew a lot about reading and language. The children in her class called her “Miss” and went around calling “Miss, Miss!!” any time they wanted something. In her class there were fourteen boys and fourteen girls, and although the boys usually made more noise, normally everyone behaved very well.

One day, “Miss” Maria asked one of the boys, Peter, to read a children’s story. Peter began reading the children’s tale, which went like this: “In a far-off land there was once a sweet young princess called Sophie…” The little boy stopped and exclaimed: “This is a girls’ story!!” and the whole class laughed. Maria the teacher interrupted to say: “Peter, it’s a children’s story and it’s for girls as well as boys. Think about this, do princes like princesses? They do, don’t they? So this is also a story for boys, because princesses are in it and when you are older you will probably like them.”

Peter was speechless at “Miss’s” explanation, but he realised that she was right and you should keep reading a story just the same, however girly it might seem.

Then it was a little girl’s turn to read a story, and her name was Christina. This time it was a story about a man who found work as a van driver , and just like Peter, Christina complained, too. But this is what the teacher Maria told her: “Do you like sweets? Well, those sweets you like so much are transported to shops in vans by men or women like the van driver in the story.”

So Christina understood that however boyish a story might seem, in reality children’s stories are for both boys and girls. Stories try to give us a message, a moral, and it doesn’t matter if a boy or a girl is reading, because everyone will learn just the same.

THE END

Once upon a time there lived a cat called Theodor. All the other cats in the area had great respect for him, for he had managed to be adopted by an old lady and he was looked after better than he could ever have imagined.

Old Chester was the local police-cat and his main duty was to warn the other cats of dogs prowling around nearby.

Today was an important day, for all the cats were going to decide who would be the new police-cat, for old Chester couldn’t run as fast as he used to and he was getting old and tired…

Theodor gave a long speech to persuade everyone that he was the best cat for such a big responsibility. He ate very well, he said, and this made him strong and healthy and therefore very fast.

Theodor thought he was certain to be voted the new police-cat because nobody else volunteered. But suddenly a pretty little cat appeared on top of a rubbish bin and spoke. “Hello friends, I too would like to be a candidate, for I’m very agile and quick“.

Surprised, Theodor replied: “But you’re only a little she-cat and this job is for he-cats, because to be a police-cat you have to be very brave, strong and fast!”

The other cats began to purr and miaow in confusion. Having listened quietly to the two cats, old Chester now spoke: “Dear friends, maybe it’s not important whether our new police-cat is male or female. What’s really important is that he or she can perform the duties of a watch-cat and keep all cats safe“.

All the cats thought hard about what Chester had said, and argued for a while about who should be the new police-cat… And who do you think it was in the end?

THE END
