….”Follow me! I will wait for you at the top of that mountain!”

And he flew away. The turtle did not hesitate to go to that distant place.

She walked through places she had never been before, saw things she had never seen before, and heard noises that were new for her.

Finally, after making a big effort, she arrived to the top of the mountain, where the bird was waiting for her. With her head lowered, looking at the ground, tired from her difficult journey, she recognized the bird´s legs and looked up at him.

– “Are you ready to fly?”.

The turtle was shocked and amazed enjoying the beauty of the bird’s wings, sometimes blinded when they made curtains in front of his eyes.

– “Walk some steps, walk until I say… there!, now, close your eyes!

The bird flew up, leaving behind him the most beautiful view of the beach from that height.

– “Breath deeply! Feel the wind on your face!” – he was whispering into her ear flying beside her – “Now, open your eyes and enjoy your flight!”

Her body didn´t seem to be so heavy at all. She could feel the strong breeze between her legs, as if they were wings. From afar, she could see the stone where she used to sit and watch the birds flying. Her life was so beautiful from this height, part of the landscape but distant at the same time.

– “Never raise your expectations! Let the world surprise you” – said the little bird.

The turtle understood the amazing secret for the first time. She understood that kind of happiness for the first time.

Back on the beach, sitting on her stone, she was never the same never again. She could now see the birds and fly with them. She only needed to close her eyes, to feel the breeze on her body, as though she had wings.

She could feel the colours, the smells, the sounds around her. She felt like she was part of that immensity in spite of being so small.

And, above all, she never stopped hearing that soft voice whispering into her ear, saying: “Enjoy your flight!”. Making her really happy ever since.

And that is the end of the story…

Short Stories for Kids written by: Raúl Simao Ferraz.

This is my story, the story of a turtle with no fear, a turtle with no fear that wanted to fly. I´m not saying she wasn’t scared but I am saying she was brave, and her enthusiasm for flying was stronger than her fear to try it.

Every morning, after eating, she used to go to the beach. There, she walked slowly on the sand, feeling every grain between her toes, taking the same way as always, until she arrived at a stone where she used to spend many hours.

She could feel the immensity of the world from there. The bay was eternally swirling without rest, and together with the sea, the wind whispered its music from the bottom of the earth to the top of the mountains, and they left some of the musical notes for herself.

But, what she most liked, was to see the birds hovering in the air, being a part of the landscape but so far from her at the same time. Only with their wings spread out, nothing else!

– “They may know something I don´t know” – wondered the turtle.

She thought she thought she could discover their incredible secret, and that if she could then she would be able to see the world in other way. If she could feel the freedom of the breeze…

One morning, a little bird perched on her shell, and asked her incessantly:

– “Why do you come here every day, stopping on the same stone? Is it because you are green? Where do you come from? How old are you? Why are you so old?…”

The turtle couldn´t see him, but could hear and feel the bird’s weight of her legs.

– “I just come to see you fly, I can’t believe you can do it” ´replied the turtle.

The little bird dropped down from the shell and walked curiously around the turtle:

– “You can´t be that big and not be able to fly! Have you ever flown? I have flown ever since I can remember”.

– “I don´t know how to do it! my body is too heavy and I have no wings!” – said the turtle.

The little bird flew around and around her, until it looked like they were both flying, watching from afar, as the turtle stretched out her neck trying to follow him dancing.

– “Follow me! I will wait for you at the top of that mountain!”

And the bird flew away. The turtle did not hesitate to go to that distant place.

Once upon a time…

There was a boy called John who really loved going to the beach. One day he went with all his family to spend the day on a beach nearby.

He enjoyed playing on the sand and in the water so much and was very happy to be there that day.

He was so happy that he could not stop smiling, rolling around in the sand and splashing around in the water, jumping and laughing without pause.

Then suddenly, he heard thunder and lightening. John was very sad to see a storm coming because it meant that he must go home.

His family had decided to spend several days in a house on the coast so they could enjoy going to the beach.

It was the most beautiful house they had ever seen; John was very happy because he could go to the beach more and play with his siblings.

After a while back at the house, he heard somebody knock on the door and went to open it. He was very surprised to see that his friends had come to spend the afternoon with him.

Now they were all together playing sailors, explorers and warriors, having fun in the house as they could not enjoy the sea that afternoon. John did not even realized that it had stopped raining, he was so happy playing with all his friends and decided to invite them more often.

THE END

Moral of the Short Story: You can find a good solution even if things aren´t as you want them to be.

Peter was a happy kid. He was always very fortunate and would say that it was thanks to the bracelet he had found on the beach when he was six.

He always won every game he played with his friends and they all wanted to be at his team or have a bracelet like his.

When summer arrived Peter and his family went to the beach for their holiday. He was very happy until one day comng out of the water he noticed that he had lost his bracelet!

He cried and cried and told his mum that he wouldn’t be lucky anymore because he had lost his bracelet. His mother tried to cheer him up saying that he had to think positive, that his luck wasn´t because of the bracelet, but he didn t believe her.

When he was back at home he didn´t want to play with his friends, thinking that without his bracelet he would never win again, but after a while he went to play with his friends.

At the beginning Peter wasn´t in the mood to play, but after playing some games he started to enjoy himself and to win again.

From that moment he realised that he didn´t need a good luck charm, he just needed a positive attitude and belief in himself.

THE END

Thomas is a special dog. He has black eyes, his hair is black except his paws, which are white and this makes it look like he is wearing socks.

He lives on a beautiful beach where he sometimes swims alone in the calm water, and at other times is with other people swimming and playing.

He loves cookies, loves to play with a ball, and to dig in the sand.

But he is a bit naughty and when he sees a ball, he can´t resist the temptation of running up and taking it and hiding it in the sand.

One day a little boy was building sand castles when lots of balls appeared under his castle. There were 124 tennis balls exactly!

When Thomas saw them, he ran to play with the little boy and realised that is was more fun to play with a friend than it was to play alone, and so he never hid a ball again.

THE END

After some weeks he found a place where he felt relaxed and happy, with calm and clear water so he decided to stay there for a while.

Days passed and the little grain of sand was very happy and enjoyed that beautiful place, playing with the waves, sunbathing and not thinking about anything else.

But soon it was time to go back home. The little grain got ready to begin his trip, but the tide had changed and it was very difficult to find his way back home.

He was very sad as it was time to finish his trip and he didn´t know how. After thinking about how to solve his problem he decided to wait until the tide turned.

After a few hours, the little grain of sand could finally begin his journey back home, he just needed a bit of patience and confidence in himself.

A long time ago, there was a girl called Eve who lived with her father. Her dream was to go to the beach. She really wanted to be there.

When she arrived at school she asked her friend if she had been to the beach. Her friend told her how beautiful t was and how Eve was going to love it when she could see it.

Then Eve went home, took out her bike and rode to the beach. It was really, really far, but she didn’t care because it was her dream.

Eve finally arrived and when she saw the beach she said: “My friend is right, the beach is beautiful, I don´t understand why Dad never showed it to me.” Eve thought that probably he had a good reason for that, and then she stayed there until the sun went down.

Her father and her friend were worried about her. So her father went in his car to look for her. He knew that she was at “Sun beach“. When he arrived he found her there. “There’s my daughter!”- he shouted.

Eve went to hug her father, because she was actually lost and a bit scared. Her father told her that she shouldn’t leave her house without permission, and she asked if they could go to the beach together during the summer.

When summer arrived Eve, her father and her friend went to the beach and were very, very happy.

THE END

The moral of the story: Children have to obey their parents, because they only want the best for them.

On a faraway beach there lived a giant turtle named Mary: Mary the great turtle. She was one of those turtles that can live for up to 200 years.

Mary was only 7 years old, but she was the size of an adult turtle. She was a very healthy eater. She ate all the good seaweed from the ocean, which made her grow strong, healthy and big. Mary loved to eat. She would never skip a meal.

One day, Mary’s friend Crocky the crab (have you read the story of Crocky the Tanned Crab?), saw her eating and decided to go and eat with her. Crocky went to Mary and started to eat some of the seaweed the waves brought up to the shore.

Mary wasn’t happy about this: “Don’t eat with me, you are bothering me,” she said in anger. This made Crocky the tanned crab feel sad, and he left the site crying.

Mary’s mom, who had seen everything, went up to Mary and said “Mary, you were very mean to Crocky, he just wanted to be with you. If you are not nice to people around you, you will end up with no friends.”

Mary was left alone to finish her meal and she realised that even though she didn’t like people to eat with her, she shouldn’t be so selfish, or she would end up alone forever.

So from that day on, Mary met her friend Crocky for lunch every day. She was also very nice to everyone she bumped into on her way there.

And that is how, Mary the giant turtle, became known as the kindest turtle on the beach.

THE END

Once upon a time there was a crab that lived on a beach in southern Spain. The other crabs called him Croqui, because he loved to cover himself in the sand, a bit like a croquette.

Croqui loved sunlight and when summer came he went mad about getting the best place on the beach to sunbathe. He was always very tanned, but he never listened to the older crabs’ advice.

The adult crabs always told him to put on sun cream to stop himself from getting sunburnt on his shell, but he would say that it wouldn’t do him any harm.

One splendid hot summer’s day, Croqui was sunbathing when suddenly he began to smell burning. “What could that be?” he thought. Then he realised that smoke was coming from one of his claws, and that it was scorched. So he raced into the sea to cool off.

After emerging from the water, Croqui saw the burns on his claw and realised that if he had listened to the older crabs, he would never have got burned.

Croqui learned that you have to be very careful on the beach, and that every time we go swimming we must put more cream on so that we don’t end up like Croqui the tanned crab.

Just as they did every summer, Charlie, his sister and his parents were off to their beach house where they would spend the whole summer until Charlie and Laura began school again in September.

Every day they would go to the beach, so the idea was to get up very early so as to be first on the beach and be able to choose a spot without a single beach umbrella to spoil their view.

But unfortunately they were never the first to arrive, for Charlie was a lazy-bones. Even though he had an alarm that was so loud it would wake up their neighbours, it was never enough to get him out of bed.

When his mother saw that Charlie hadn’t got up, she would march into his room to tell him that if he didn’t get up they would go to the beach without him. Well, that always made him leap out of bed like a flash of lightning…

Charlie liked playing with his sister on the shore by the waves; he especially loved making sand castles, but his parents wouldn’t let him go because their beach umbrella was right at the back of the beach and their view of the shore was blocked by hundreds more parasols.

This made Charlie very angry with his parents, so he spent all morning under their beach umbrella staring at all the people in front of them and not saying a word.

As he sat there, Charlie noticed a man with a multicoloured beach umbrella right at the front, in front of all the rest. He said to himself, “That could’ve been my umbrella there instead of that man’s multicoloured one.”

Then, as if by magic, a strong gust of wind blew the man’s multicoloured umbrella all the way down the beach. The man got up to chase it, at which point Charlie leapt up and ran to put his towel in the empty spot to play with his bucket and spade.

When the man came back after having recovered his multicoloured umbrella, he got a nasty surprise, for someone had taken his place…

“What are you doing in my spot, young man?” he asked.

So Charlie answered: “Well, you left and there was no one here, so I thought I could take your place.”

The man looked very angry at that, but he controlled himself and said: “I get up at 8am every day to come and put my beach umbrella here. That way I get to enjoy the views from all morning. What time did you get here?”

Charlie was astonished at how early the man had got up to choose his spot on the beach, and realised that we must make an effort to get what we want, just like this man did.

“I’m sorry, I thought it was ok to sit here,” answered Charlie, gathering up his things.

And when Charlie’s alarm went off the following day, he had no trouble springing out of bed, for he had learned that we must make an effort in order to get what we want.

THE END
