Short Story for Boys and girls written by: Obed Madrid Calvo.

A gnome who lived in the forest, was at home boiling chestnuts in his cooking pot as it was the soup he really liked.

His friend, Mr.Snail appeared at the window and called out to him.

– “Good morning Happy Gnome” – greeted the snail.

– “Hello Mr.Snail, do you want to taste my chestnut soup?” – said the gnome.

– “Mmm, it smells really nice!”- the snail said.

Mr. Snail told the gnome about a place in the field where there were many chestnuts.

– “I found lots of them yesterday, when I went for a walk” – said the snail to the happy gnome.

The snail and the gnome finished their delicious breakfast and went to collect more chestnuts to have dinner together.

When they arrived, there were no more chestnuts . Somebody had already collected them.

– “There are no more chestnuts left! Where are they? Where are they?!” – screamed the gnome, angrily.

-“Don´t worry, I´m sure there are more somewhere near here, let´s have a look”.

They searched for chestnuts all over the forest until it started to rain. They looked for a place to shelter and saw a little wooden house. The door was open and they were wet, so the gnome said:

– “Let´s go in, nobody is inside”

-“We can´t go in without being invited” – replied the snail.

But the happy gnome did not want to get any wetter, so he put the snail on his shoulders and went into the house.

– “Mr.Snail! look! Here is a sack of chestnuts from the forest!” – the happy gnome exclaimed.

– “But somebody took them before us. They aren´t ours.” said the snail

But the gnome wanted all the chestnuts for himself, so he took the sack and left to walk in the rain.

Suddenly, a fork of lightning broke the branch of a tree, and it fell on the happy gnome. Mr.Snail, who was following him, tried to help him out from under it, but the branch was too big.

Then, a wise little rabbit appeared. He had seen what had happened at the wooden house, and helped the snail to move the branch.

-“Maybe, none of this would have happened if you had not taken those chestnuts, that are not yours.”

– “These chestnuts are mine, I have collected them!” – the gnome insisted.

Seeing that the gnome was not telling the truth, the rabbit took him back to the little wooden house.

-“Look, happy gnome, look through the window” – said the rabbit to the gnome.

The gnome obeyed and looked through the window. He saw a little mummy rabbit, sitting at the table with her three kids. They were sad because there was barely anything on their plates.

-“The mother rabbit had collected all those chestnuts for dinner, and now they only have four pieces of bread. Meanwhile, you have there enough chestnuts for everyone” – said the wise rabbit.

-“Yes! happy gnome!” – exclaimed Mr.Snail -“You can cook chestnut soup for everyone!”

The happy gnome realized that he had been wrong and so he went inside the house and apologised to the mother rabbit. She could see that the gnome was repentant, forgave him and accepted Mr.Snail’s idea”.

So, they all had the happy gnome´s delicious soup for dinner. They ate, laughed, played…and that is how they all became friends.

Click to read: GENEROUS FATTY (SECOND PART)

…The strange thing was that, the more vegetables he gave away, the more lettuces, chard, tomatoes, etc, were left in the wheelbarrow. And he was so happy to receive kisses, hugs and thankful words from the parents of his classmates who used to make fun of him calling him “fat”.

Next day he went to his vegetable garden to plant more seeds, but was shocked when saw that many vegetables had sprouted and that there were an endless number of chard, lettuces and tomatoes. It was incredible and his parents were astonished when he told them over dinner.

-“Lolo, we are so proud of you and of your good heart. Several mums have thanked me for the food you gave them yesterday. They said you are a very good kid, and Dad and I feel really proud of you. Besides this, you have lost some weight because your trousers and shirts are too big for you and so now you need smaller clothes”.

Over the following days, even though Lolo collected his vegetables every afternoon, the next morning the garden was full of vegetables, which Lolo happily distributed to his neighbors, helping many needy families, who were very thankful for Lolo´s generosity.

His parents were so surprised at these strange events, that they decided to go to the vegetable garden one night to discover what was going on while their son was sleeping.

They were astonished when saw many rabbits, mice, squirrels and birds working the land, directed by a very pretty blond fairy, that, who used her magic powders, to accelerate the budding process of the seeds that Lolo had been buying every afternoon using the money for the snacks and candies that he no longer ate.

One morning, when he woke up to go to school his mum almost fainted when she saw that Lolo was not a fat boy anymore. Thanks to the good fairy, he had turned into a handsome and slender student.

His mother hugged him and called his father. The three of them were really happy and later at school, the pupils and Mr.Adams, the teacher, congratulated Lolo who was not an alienated kid anymore but the most loved boy by his classmates.

Several years passed and Lolo grew to be a handsome and smart guy. His neighbors lent him land to sow all kind of vegetables and fruit trees. And the miracle of the food proliferation happened every day thanks to his work and goodness.

Those who know him will tell you that every afternoon, several trucks carrying food leave the small town were Angel lives with his parents, to bring happiness to hundreds of needy families from all the towns and cities around.

Short Story for Kids written by: Renata H.

A day like any other day, Ricky woke up and went to have a bath before being one hour in front of the mirror as usually; to go to see his friends.

-“Hi guys! How are you?” – Said Lily happily.

Ricky thought to himself: “They are so badly dressed; Lily always wearing Lilac clothes! and…oh…that fatty Roky sloppy with his beige shirt, even if he thinks is white…”

– ” Are we going to the party tonight?” – asked Roky.

– “No way, Roky” – said Ricky.

– “Why not?” – asked Lily without knowing what was Ricky thinking about.

– “I don´t tolerare it any more, you are always badly dressed, cheap…”

– “But that is how we dress”.

– “I know, but you can listen to my advices, like…why don´t you change your shirt! You keep saying is white although it´s clearly beige due to the dirt”.

– “That again?, Roky, how can you let him offend you like that?”

-“I have some suggestions for you too, Lily; Why are you always wearing lilac clothes? Can you not be more sophisticated?”

-“…Roky, let´s go! leave him alone!” – Lily Shouted.

Later, at the party…

– “Roky look! is Ricky…”

– “But he said he was not coming”.

– “I know, but, look who is with him!”

– “Oh! Lion and his long mane, with Panther and Tiger with his deep look!”.

– “Hello to everyone!so nice you came, Ricky” – Said Roky.

– “Excuse me, who are you?” – said the Lion rustling his long mane on Roke´s face.

– “What are you doing talking to them?”

-“Oh!Look who came, the rabbit girl!” – said Panther

-“They are Ricky´s friends” – Said Tiger

-“Ricky…are Tiger and Panther right? Are they your friends? because if they are…” – asked Lion

-“Of course not!I don´t even know them, friend of those animals?..” – replied Ricky.

– “Let´s go out of here” – Said Lily to Roky.

Everything is not bright and now it was Ricky´s turn:

– “Ricky! bring my green leaves juice!”

-“Yes Lion, Immediately”- Said Ricky.

– “And we want two lemon juices and nuts!” – said Panther and Tiger.

– “What?”

– “Oh..are you deaf now?…NUTS!! Haven´t you collected enough?”

-“But..I took them for me…” – said Ricky.

-“Forget it, nothing is yours from now on, everything will be ours!Do you understand?”

Ricky went panting to prepare everything to the kitchen.

All the days were the same, days passed, and one day they asked Ricky to burn his friends´clothes. He did it, but Lily´s house was burned accidentally.

-“Wow! you are more evil than us” – Lion said.

– “Lion…that was not my intention, you ordered to me”

– “No…you did it…Didn´t he, guys?”

– “No, it´s also your fault, so, you are going to help me to reconstruct Lily´s house”

– “Haha! don´t you dare to say that we ordered you to do it”.

-“And…who treated those guys badly?”

-“Ricky” – said Panther.

-“Yesss” – said the lion.

– “THAT IS ENOUGH!YOU ARE THE WORST! – threw the tray with all the drinks on, hitting the lion´s leg.

– “ROAR!” Do something!” – roared the Lion, the panther and the tiger tried to calm his pain.

Once at home, he began to pack his suitcase to go far far away. Was moving all his things and suddenly a little porcelain figure, that Lily had given him for his birthday, fell down. He remembered Lily´s words:

“A broken porcelain is like a broken friendship. There are two options, try to paste the pieces, or throw them away. But you have to know that if you paste them, nobody will admire it, because is damaged and looks ugly”

-“If I throw it up, I will loose it forever!…these are the consequences of my actions…”

With this words in his head, he knew that his friendship was already lost.

Left a note apologizing to his two friends, Lily and Roky, too late, maybe, but at least he did it…and at the end of the note wrote that his house was now Lily´s house.

And the evil Lion, Tiger and Panther were expelled from the forest due to Ricky and other animals´statement.

THE END

Short Story written by: Mariache (dedicated to my grandnephews from Polochic Valley, Guatemala)

Hannah was a poor girl who did not have a home or a place to sleep. She barely had anything to eat every day, and her only toy was her teddy bear “Toto” that she had found in a trash can, it was broken and was missing an arm.

During the night She would sleep anywhere, snuggling up with Toto, dreaming that some day she would go to the Country of Faires.

One night, she fell sleep as always, hugging her bear “Toto”, when suddenly, heard a very sweet voice calling her:

“Hannah…Hannah…”

The girl opened her eyes and was surprised by a strong light and in the middle there was a young girl, almost transparent, with crystal wings and golden hair, sitting on a dragonfly of pink crystal.

“Who are you?” – she asked with fear – “Where do you come from?”

“Don´t be scared” – said the young girl tenderly.

“I see you in my dreams every night, and I know your wish is to visit the Country of Faires. Come with me, we are going to fly on my dragonfly and visit your desired country”.

Hannah approached the dragonfly scared, she hugged her teddy bear Toto tightly as she jumped on the pink crystal dragonfly. The young girl with crystal wings and golden hair tied her to the dragonfly with silk ribbons.

They flew over the sea, below the sky, until finally, the pink dragonfly alighted in the middle of a garden that had fountains and streams and all kind of flowers. The golden haired fairy held Hannah´s hand to show her around.

There were fairies making sweets, all kind of sweets and lollipops. Other were making porcelain dolls with lace dresses that could walk and talk. Other fairies were making all kind of toys, some moved and others were stuffed. When Hannah saw them, she asked the fairy to repair her teddy bear Toto.

Once Toto had a new arm, the golden haired, crystal winged fairy continued to show Hannah around. They saw a little donkey that had a little bell hanging from a golden thread around his neck. He carried two sacks with lots of little bags and illuminated boxes inside.

Hannah asked curiously: “Who are you? What is a little donkey like you doing in the Country of Faires? what are those illuminated boxes inside your sacks?

The donkey answered: “Don´t you know me? Don´t you know who I am?”

“No” – said Hannah shocked.

“Well, I have visited you many nights making you to dream about this country. I also sent you a friend, your teddy bear “Toto”. Other kids had thrown Toto away because he was broken and only had one arm, but you took him and cared for him, and treated him with affection…and once here, you asked the fairies to repair your teddy bear.

I am the one that goes all over the world visiting children every night. Visiting them in their dreams, children that are alone like you. And I give them love, affection, faith, happiness and illusion from my illuminated boxes.

So, when I consider it necessary, I send the pink crystal dragonfly and the gold hair fairy to bring the kids here as a reward for their good feelings in spite of all the difficulties they have suffered.

THE END

Short Story written by: “The Ecologist”.

The girl´s walk was awesome, she was enjoying nature, contemplating the landscape, the forest, appreciating environmentalism, she felt like she was in a magic place without any negative feelings.

Two more drops touched her face and they were friendship and respect. She realized that she could also learn these values at school. She could learn the value of respect by respecting her teachers and schoolmates, and by fulfilling her obligations at school such as doing homework and supporting her classmates.

The girl was pleased with everything she was learning. She understood that friendship is essential in life and that it is important to take care of your friends, to respect and love them, and to understand and support them.

Humility and honesty were the next moral rain drops dropping onto the girl. It is very important to understand these values for if somebody doesn´t have these values they won’t be a good person. Not lying, not stealing and not lying to yourself, are some of the characteristics of these human values.

Suddenly it started to rain hard. She smiled, happy to be learning the lessons of God with his message captured in the magic drops. She learnt that the love of one’s neighbour begins by understanding the love of God and that it is important to honor and respect our parents, family and friends, to be generous, supportive and kind, and to help without expecting anything in return. Only in this way can society be more humanitarian and be more understanding of moral values.

Short Story written by: Paloma

There was a little girl who lived with her father but unfortunately they were poor.

The girl´s dream was to have a big colourful castle and a pony.

One day she went into the woods to gather wild berries. The little girl was so distracted tasting the fruit and choosing the good ones that she didn´t realise how far she was moving away from her father’s house until it was getting late and she was lost.

She was very scared and walked and walked for hours. Finally she saw an abandoned wooden cabin and went inside.

She was so tired that she failed to notice all the bags full of gold beside the hearth. She just climbed into bed and fell asleep.

After a few hours a voice woke her up. It was her father, who had been really worried and had been looking for her for hours, shouting out in desperatation:

– “Julie! where are you?!”

The girl jumped out of the bed and opened the door of the cabin.

– “Dad! dad! I’m here!” – she shouted.

He ran to hug and kiss her. He went inside the cabin and this time the girl saw the bags of gold and told her father.

-“Oh, we won´t be poor any more, and I can buy my daughter the castle and the pony she always wanted! – he thought.

And so he did. The girl and her father never suffered from hunger again, and became the heroes of the city helping every person who asked for their help.

THE END

There were three friends living in the forest. A monkey, a turtle and a rabbit.

One day the turtle and the rabbit were discussing about who was faster and smarter.

The rabbit said he was because he could jump high and run fast.

– “You are wrong”! – replied the turtle – “I´m slow but very smart!”

Suddenly the monkey came up with an idea. If the turtle and the rabbit had a race, they would solve their argument.

The rabbit started to laugh – “I´m going to win ” – he said

– “We will see…”- said the turtle

The rabbit started the race very fast, and the turtle was slow but persistent.

In the middle of the race the rabbit got very hungry and found a pile of carrots and thought:

– “The turtle will never catch me, so it doesn´t matter if I lie here for a while and eat some carrots.”

After eating all the carrots he started to feel very tired.

“Ok, I will sleep a little bit, the turtle will never catch me anyway.”

And so he did. When he woke up he found that the turtle had won because he had been arrogant.

THE END

A long, long time ago when the sea was created, lots of different kinds of colourful fish were born, all sizes and colours, and there was one special one, a little blue fish, shiny and beautiful. He was different to the others because his colour reflected everything around him due to the sunlight.

The little blue fish didn´t understand why he was like that. He was never going to play with his friends because the brightness of his scales could blind his friends´ eyes and he didn´t want to annoy them.

One cloudy day, the other little fish didn´t have enough light to play in and decided to call the little blue fish because they needed him to illuminate the place.

The little blue fish realised that it didn´t matter how different he was, if he could help others.

From that day on, he played with his friends every day and they had lots of fun together.

Once upon a time there was a boy called Peter who went to school. One day, Peter took one of his classmate’s pencil case, and hid it in his bag.

When Ian realized that his pencil case was missing, he told his teacher.

The teacher asked angrily: “Has anyone seen Ian´s pencil case?” – but nobody said a word.

“Don´t worry, we will find it.” – said the teacher to Ian. But they couldn´t find it.

A few days later, Peter also took Mary´s short stories book from her bag and hid it too.

Then the teacher started to suspect him. One day, when the pupils were at break, Peter´s bag dropped to the floor and Mary´s book fell out of it.

When Peter came back from break, the teacher punished him and told everything that had happened to his parents who then also punished Peter.

A few weeks later, a bag with classroom material inside it disappeared. Everybody thought that Peter had stolen it, so the teacher punished him again. But this time, Peter was innocent.

Peter cried and cried, and had learnt his lesson, and he never stole anything again.

THE END

There was a pirate ship named “The Black Forest” that was sailed on the seas by only one pirate, Blackbeard.

The whole world knew who Blackbeard was. It was said that the pirate would capture people and kill them on the high seas.

One day all the people he had captured came home feeling sad instead of feeling happy to be free. “He is gone!” – they said.

Their families were shocked, “Why aren’t you happy to be free?”

And the newcomers answered, “Nobody has never treated us as well as Blackbeard did. But now he is dead, that´s why we are sad”.

Their families didn´t understand a thing, “But, weren´t you captured? ”

“Captured?” – they answered – “Ha, ha, ha, not at all! He saved us from a shipwreck, and was very kind to us. He gave us food, water and shelter. Blackbeard saved our lives.”

From that day on, Blackbeard was known as the kindest and most generous pirate in the world.

THE END

The moral of the Story: Appearances are deceptive, the pirate who looks like the most evil person in the world, is actually the kindest.
